Islanders Interested In O'Reilly?

Colorado RFA Ryan O'Reilly is the last remaining of this years crop of restricted free agents to be un signed.  Reports suggest that he is looking for a 5-6 year contract for 5 million dollars per season.  Meanwhile Colorado is offering around 3.5 million per season.

Many news outlets think this saga is going to end with Colorado trading the young center because of his high salary demands.  They are reportedly seeking a roster player and a top prospect from a team in a trade.

According to thefourthperiod.com, the Islanders are one team that has shown interest in O'Reilly.  As of now the price is probably to steep for them, and given O'Reillys career up to this point it is a very steep price.  Through three seasons in the NHL, O'Reilly has only put up top six caliber numbers one time.

In his first two years, O'Reilly put up 26 points respectively in each season.  However, last year O'Reilly broke out and put up 55 points.  To relate this for Islander fans, what O'Reilly is doing would be like if after his first season here Pa Parenteau asked for a multi year deal worth millions without proving himself first.  O'Reilly should follow Parenteaus model and if he does he will no doubt get paid.

As things currently sit, I don't see the Islanders making a play for him.  Having to trade a roster player then a top prospect and on top of that signing him to that massive contract is just not the Islanders style under Garth Snow.  If anymore news breaks on this we will be sure to update, however I wouldn't go out and start reserving your Ryan O'Reilly Islander jerseys.
