Tavares Officially Named Captain

This morning, at a news conference prior to the start of the Islanders charity golf outing, Garth Snow introduced John Tavares as the 14th captain in team history.

It had long been speculated since Mark Streits June trade to the Flyers that Tavares would be named the teams new captain.  Streit had served as captain since 2011 before the trade.

Tavares had 47 points in 48 games last season on the way to leading the Islanders to their first playoff appearance since 2007.  Tavares ended up finishing third in the MVP voting this season behind Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby.
