Tonight, in what was their poorest played game in over two weeks, our Islanders had their win streak stopped at 5 as they fell by a score of 5-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Here are some of my notes from the game:
-Chad Johnson didn't show up tonight and it really came back to haunt the team. If Johnson plays like we know he is capable of the Islanders leave the first in the lead or at the very least tied which would've been way different than heading into the second period down a goal.
-Although they got a power play goal tonight, the unit overall wasn't very impressive. They got multiple power plays in key situations and weren't able to muster up much of anything.
-Isles had a poor game in their own zone. This has been a problem on and off all season and if they are aiming for sustained success this is something that absolutely needs to be rectified.
-The "kid line" was the Islanders best offensive unit tonight. They had the most consistent chances and never really had horrible shifts like some other lines did. Brock Nelson in particular had an excellent game showing off his excellent shot on his goal.
-We all know how good John Tavares is, but he really needs to play smarter with the puck. The entire team really has a problem with turnovers, but it starts with him. He makes those no look passes far to often and now they have rubbed off on teammates as well as we saw in the third period tonight when Brock Nelson attempted one that failed and ended up clearing the zone for the Lightning.
The streak had to come to an end sooner or later, however, for it to come to an end like this is disappointing. If the Islanders had come out and played their game and Johnson showed up, this was a game that easily could've become their sixth straight win.
